Mr. BLAKE:

These stenographers who

start in after a three month's business course do not stop at $600. They are getting much better salaries than the school teachers of this country. The Toronto Globe, for instance, two or three months before last midsummer, carried two or three columns every day of advertisements for teachers, with a second class certificate, at ia salary of $500 to $700. I think we should leave it to the commission to decide each case on its .merits and if they think a man's training justifies them in granting an extra $200 he will receive it. A school teacher has to spend a much longer time in study than a stenographer, and paying her way during all that time.

Mr. BLAKE:

Evidently those gentlemen are talking for Hansard. As the Acting Minister of Finance has pointed out, an extra $200 may be added to the $600, and

that is more than many of the school 'teachers in this country are getting today. There are very few school teachers in the rural schools of Ontario, and they pay bigger salaries than the city schools, who are drawing more 'than $650 to-day.
