Mr. Flemming (Royal):

I am informed that in the initial year something like 1,100,000 square miles was completely inventoried by seven provinces across Canada. Since that time we have continued to participate and the recommendation is that we shall continue to participate to the extent of 50 per cent of the cost, although it may be necessary that an over-all saving be applied since we feel that this is work of such a nature that it should be fairly well continued year after year. May I mention this additional point. I am sure the committee will be interested to know that the establishment of a pulp mill in Nova Scotia, the point raised by the hon. member for Inverness-Richmond was partially at least due to the fact that up to date, almost up to the minute inventory information was available to those people who were interested in establishing that plant at that time.

Hon. H. J. Flemming (Minister of Forestry):

1. Information in regard to forest potential in the area to which the jurisdiction of the eastern Rockies forest conservation board applies is contained in a forest inventory which is now being prepared by the province of Alberta, and which is expected to be completed this fall. This information is in the custody of the department of lands and forests of Alberta.

2. Yes. The charge for air photographs is 50 cents each, and for forest maps 75 cents per township. The charge for area and timber volume summaries depends on the time required to prepare the data.
