Mr. Lang:

Mr. Speaker, it would be my contention that we have not taken any unreasonable action in relation to filings and, therefore, I have optimism about the effectiveness of these Air Canada fares. The truth is that certain fares filed by American carriers in the past six or eight months were subject to suspensive action by the Canadian Transport Commission, and that led to the request by us for discussions with the United States about how to handle these filings in our two countries before our two regulatory agencies. I think we requested those discussions last September or November, but only now have the Americans agreed to having them and they will be held in April.

In the course of looking at the Air Canada fares, the Canadian Transport Commission indicated that certain parallel and similar fares filed by air carries from the United States would indeed be allowed. In other words, they would no longer be suspended and, therefore, they can go into effect. I am sure that the Canadian Transport Commission is ready and willing to look quickly at additional fares which may be filed by American carriers.
