Mr. GERVAIS:

Last year a contract was

let for the dredging of about 50,000 cubic yards but the contractor did not complete the work. On October 15, I believe, the Tourville Lumber Company was sold to the St. Lawrence Lumber Company and I ascertained in an interview with one of the proprietors of the Tourville concern that the St. Lawrence company had asked for more dredging to be done because they intended operating on a larger scale. I suppose the contract has been increased owing to the demand of the company for greater accommodation. There is regular steamship communication between Montreal, Berthier and Louiseville twice a week and all the traffic, which is considerable, is carried by water. I have received correspondence in connection with the subject and I can assure the committee that the dredging is necessary.
