Mr. BRUCE:

Yes. It has been investigated by the superintendent of buildings of the university who has reported that it would suit admirably for housing a large number of returned veteran students.

Mr. BRUCE:

May I ask if it is possible

to have a reply, if not to-day at least to-morrow? This question has been standing on the order paper for fifteen days.

Mr. BRUCE:

I wish to take advantage of this amendment to put in a plea with the minister to assist the university of Toronto to get what is known as the Eglinton Hunt club quarters for housing for student veterans of this war who will enter for the next session, 1946. We are very short of housing in the city of Toronto. If these buildings could be obtained it would relieve living accommodation for other citizens. Therefore I ask the minister if he will use his best efforts to have the air force who are now occupying this building, in part only, give it up for the purposes of the university.

Mr. BRUCE:

I think it would take about 400, perhaps 450 who otherwise would have no place to live. A thorough canvas has been made of possible living quarters without success. We have had to take Ajax, as the minister probably knows, and this will be filled to capacity next year. I urge upon the government to vacate this building and make it available for veteran students.
