Hon. J. W. Monteith (Perth-Wilmot):

Mr. Speaker, I should like to ask a question of the minister in charge of manpower. I refer to the recent closing of the Werlich Industries Limited plant at Stratford causing the lay-off of some 150 employees. Has the minister looked into this matter and, can he say what might be done for these people who have been laid off?

Hon. J. W. Monteith (Perth-Wilmot):

Mr. Speaker, I wish to direct my question to the Minister of Transport. Would the minister inquire of Canadian National Railways whether or not any changes are being contemplated in the upcoming fall timetable which would further downgrade service in western Ontario, particularly freight service between Stratford and Sarnia? As such a move would undoubtedly cause further lay-offs in the area, would the minister use his persuasive powers to try to prevent any further deterioration of such services?

Hon. J. W. Monleilh (Perlh-Wilmol):

Mr. Speaker, in the absence of the Secretary of State may I direct my question to the parliamentary secretary. In view of the fact that many Canadians, both rural and urban, are greatly fearful that "Radio Noon" may suffer a similar fate to that of "Country Calendar", will he inquire whether the CBC is contemplating changing or cancelling the program "Radio Noon", which is heard daily at 12.10 p.m., and report to the House?

I shall be very brief, Mr. Speaker. I take it then that the legislation will not be enacted in time to have it take effect in September?
