Hon. Ed Lumley (Minister of Regional Industrial Expansion):

Mr. Speaker, I always enjoy answering the questions of Members who are so negative. They give you a great opportunity to respond. We have not been talking about cars, Mr. Speaker; we have been actively involved in obtaining over $1 billion invested in the automotive industry in the Province of Ontario.

Finally, Mr. Speaker, we will look very seriously at the possibility of a subagreement with the Province of Ontario on tourism.

Hon. Ed Lumley (Minister of Regional Industrial Expansion):

Mr. Speaker, first of all, with respect to the preamble to the Hon. Member's question, I would indicate that my colleague, the Minister of State for Small Businesses and Tourism, I believe, in the past year has done a fantastic job with the industry. For example, he has increased the budget for advertising. He has introduced a special advertising program, for example, throughout the whole northern part of the United States in order to increase traffic back and forth in terms of tourist development.

Mr. Lumley:

In terms of the co-operation with the provinces, Mr. Speaker, up until this point in time I believe we had-going back as far as five years and six years ago-about nine or ten sub-agreements on tourism. Therefore the Hon. Member's comment with respect to co-operation with the province is not accurate.

With respect to a possible new sub-agreement between the Province of Ontario and Canada, we are considering it. It was most unfortunate that the Treasurer of Ontario would mention that in his Budget before we had made a decision to have a sub-agreement. However, it is still a possibility.

Mr. Lumley:

Then, to top it off, he tried to stand up in the House a week later under S.O. 21 and did not even acknowledge the contribution of the Government of Canada in getting the Honda plant there.
