Hon. Len Marchand (Minister of State (Environment)):
Mr. Speaker, the move to privatize the two laboratories is going very well. I sent the hon. member a press release a few days ago, or perhaps last week, indicating that the interim board of directors has been very successful in its quest for funds. The board is very hopeful that all the employees now working for the laboratories will move over and work for the new organization. I have also been told by Mr. Bob Rogers that the board's quest for funds from various sources has been successful in the initial stages.

Mr. Marchand:
Mr. Speaker, the interim board of directors of Forintek, which is a new organization, has indicated very clearly to its employees that they have been offered jobs. As I said before, I hope the employees will see fit to become members of the new organization. I am very confident that this can be accomplished, as is the new board of directors, and that the privatization of these two labs will take place efficiently.

Hon. Len Marchand (Minister of State (Environment)):
1.
Most ice reconnaissance is flown under a single multi-year contract which remains in force, but flying time will be cut back to the minimum allowed in the contract.
2. The reduction represents approximately (a) 13 per cent of the proposed budget and (b) about 17 per cent in contract flying hours.
3. Likely in the order of 40 hours or 4 per cent of the planned total for the Atlantic areas as compared to 90 hours or 6 per cent of the planned total for the Arctic.
4. There will be no reduction in service output, for most cuts will be made in remote sensor development and in the system documenting where these sensor records were obtained.
