Right Hon. L. S. Laurent (Prime Minister):

Mr. Speaker, as the hon. gentleman has suggested, I will take this as notice. However, I can say immediately that the government will do everything possible to further the research that is now being carried out in connection with this power plant that is being established here in Canada. If we can ascertain data that will support the optimistic view that power can be produced from that energy at, as the hon. gentleman has suggested, about half of what it costs to produce power from steam otherwise, it will be a very happy development and will certainly stimulate the progress of the industrial development that is taking place

in Canada and make it easier to have it more widespread throughout the country.

Mr. SI. Laurent (Quebec East):

And speak against it, and do as some other hon. members of other parties in the house have found it was their responsibility to do, get up and honestly and frankly state their views even though they regretted that their views were not shared by the other members of the party with which they had been associated.

Having taken the responsibility of rising first to vote on the motion which brings into application this rule of the house, I must be prepared to obey fully the consequences of that motion and I am told that the consequences are such that I must now take my seat.

Mr. SI. Laurent (Quebec East):

No, Mr. Speaker. That question was considered and we came to the conclusion that, having appointed a royal commission, it would not be proper to recommend the appointment of a special committee to proceed to make the same inquiry at the same time.
