Mr. Greenaway:
Mr. Speaker, the question I would like to ask deals with this rubbish of a free vote the last time this measure came before the House. I say rubbish because it was not a free vote and everyone knows it. I was told by a Liberal Member of Parliament, one who still sits in this House today, that the Prime Minister of the day put pressure on his caucus to vote in favour of abolition. If they did not he would call an election and the Liberals were down about 20 per cent in the polls at that time. I would like the Hon. Member to please comment on that.

Mr. Lome Greenaway (Parliamentary Secretary to Minister of State (Forestry and Mines)):
Mr. Speaker, I, too, have a petition to present to the House on capital punishment. Citizens in British Columbia, particularly in my riding of Cariboo-Chilcotin, indeed from across the country, 2,022 signatures in all, call upon this Parliament to pass a motion favouring the return of capital punishment. That brings the total to in excess of 18,000 signature on petitions presented to this House on this subject.

Mr. Speaker, is it true that the official policy of the New Democratic Party is not to sell gas from western Canada to the United States? Is that the stand of the New Democratic Party?

Mr. Greenaway:
Can the Hon. Member show us proof that British Telecom offered $750 million for Teleglobe? Is the Hon. Member against a small company like Memotec buying it, or is he against small business? Would he rather have had Bell Canada buy it? It probably would have bought it for $700 million. Then I guess the Hon. Member would have said that there had been a monopoly.
First, where is the proof that British Telecom offered $750 million? Does the Hon. Member have a copy of a letter, or what does he have?
