Hon. Donald S. Macdonald (Rosedale):

Mr. Speaker, I thank hon. members: the warm response reminds me of the line from Macbeth about my predecessor, Macdonwald, of whom it was said: "Nothing in his life became him like the leaving it".

I should like to direct my question to the Secretary of State. Is he in a position to meet with the Professional Association of Canadian Theatres for the purpose of discussing further financing for the performing arts?

Hon. Donald S. Macdonald (Rosedale):

Mr. Speaker, in response to the invitation of my clansman and friend I would refer him to paragraph 159 of Beauchesne's Fourth Edition which makes clear that it is state papers which must be tabled by the minister and not private documents or memoranda.

As a member who does not expect to be very long in this House I can only say that I agree with the hon. member for Westmount (Mr. Drury) that the approach taken by the hon. member for Saskatoon-Biggar (Mr. Hnatyshyn) is not in the best interests of the kind of parliamentary debate that we should be seeking in this House. I join the hon. member for Westmount in saying that I hope this kind of attitude will not continue.
