Mr. Brian Mulroney (Leader of the Opposition):

Madam Speaker, first of all 1 wish to thank the Right Hon. Prime Minister (Mr. Trudeau) for his gracious and cordial remarks. There may have been some minor political differences between us in the past, as there certainly will be in the future, but nevertheless, I have always recognized that the Right Hon. Prime Minister is a man of great distinction, and I wish to offer him my sincere thanks for his warm welcome here today.

The Prime Minister has always been a man of great accomplishment and distinction. I was honoured by the thoughtfulness and the generosity of his words today. 1 wait with bated breath for tomorrow.

Mr. Mulroney:

Dear friends and colleagues, Madam Speaker, I know this is a very unusual day, at least for me, but I sincerely wish to thank everyone for the warm and cordial welcome I was given here today.

My thanks to all of you for your kindness and generiosity. I will try, given the magnificent example set by my predecessor, the Right Hon. Member for Yellowhead (Mr. Clark), to serve this House and to serve you with honour and distinction.
