Mr. Horner:

Mr. Speaker, the Conservative government of 1961 exported something like $500 million worth of cars. Today we are exporting something over $10 billion worth. If we used their efforts as a guide, I am sure it would be a dismal failure today.

We are encouraging a tremendous amount of R and D to be undertaken in Canada. We have taken steps already, and I announced additional steps yesterday, to encourage the Big Three to spend more money on R and D. We will continue to pressure them to spend more money on R and D in the automobile industry in Canada.
