Sir WILFRID LAURIER:

May I call the attention of the Government to a paragraph which appeared a few days ago in a paper published in this city, the Ottawa Evening Journal. It appears that some police officers were after some young men wffio were supposed to have deserted the service, or failed to report, and the paragraph to which I call the attention of the Government reads in this way:
Several other little farm-houses were visited but without results. A father whose two boys were supposed to be defaulters was brought to Pembroke and held as a hostage until the boys report.
Of' course, it would be an absolutely illegal act to take a father as a hostage for the appearance of his boys. I would ask the Government to get some report upon that.
