Progressive Conservative

Hon. Harvie Andre (Minister of State and Leader of the Government in the House of Commons):

Madam Speaker, I gather that the hon. member's position and perhaps that of his party is that Canadian Post should not be engaged in the sponsoring of dancers and theatre in this country. It is not a position that we associate with.
The hon. member may be aware, and I am not sure that he is, that approximately 45 per cent to 50 per cent of Canada Post's business is fully competitive. In the competitive marketplace, one advertises if one wants to remain competitive and seek the business.
Canada Post engages in advertising along with a lot of other companies. The hon. member wants us to go back to the bad old days where the taxpayers subsidized the post office. It was not competitive. I am sorry, I do not think that we will take his advice in that regard.
