April 2, 1993 (34th Parliament, 3rd Session)

PC

Barry D. Moore (Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of National Revenue)

Progressive Conservative

Mr. Barry Moore (Pontiac-Gatineau-Labelle):

Madam Speaker, I have the pleasure to inform the House that the Government of Canada has renewed today its support to the "Best Ever" Winter Program.
The program will receive $31.2 million over a period of five years starting in 1993-94.
The "Best Ever" Winter Program was introduced in 1983 by the Government of Canada (Fitness and Amateur Sports) in preparation for the 1988 Olympic Winter Games in Calgary. If the excellent performance of Canadian athletes at the last Olympic Winter Games is any indication the program has certainly reached its goals since it was introduced. It has also promoted participation in winter sports and the development of a sound administrative structure to develop sports programs.
With the Lillehammer Olympic games scheduled for less than a year from now, the renewal of this important program reflects this government's ongoing commitment to Canadian athletes and for winter sports.
