Independent Conservative

Mr. MACLEAN.

As to buying very expensive property for public buildings, I do not quite approve of that. I would rather go in for the system that obtains in Washington where they scatter their public buildings over the city. If you attempt to expropriate this property in front of us on Wellington Street, you will have to pay $1,000 a foot. There are a number of properties that could be got In other portions of the city half a mile from here where you can probably get land for 50 or 75 dollars a foot frontage. But it is the duty of the government to come forward with some plan, and take the responsibility. The House should not find a plan for them.
