Hon. Lionel Chevrier (Minister of Transport):

Mr. Speaker, I have not seen the
judgment which was handed down by the board of transport commissioners. I am sure my hon. friend realizes that it is a judgment which has to do with the application by the railways for increases in freight rates brought about by the increase in wages of certain classes of employees of the Canadian National Railways. That being so,
I am not too clear as to why the government should indicate that such a judgment should be rescinded. My recollection of prior judgments of the board is that if it can be established that the railways have been put to increased costs, because of increased wages, then I think the board must of necessity grant an increase in rates, provided that it meets with the facts. While I shall be very glad to consider the request made by my hon. friend, I doubt very much whether the decision would be in favour of a rescission.
