ROUTINE PROCEEDINGS

CANADIAN NATIONAL RAILWAYS

PC

Geoffrey Douglas Scott

Progressive Conservative

Mr. Geoff Scott (Hamilton-Wentworth):

Madam Speaker, whereas the appointment of the new chairman of Canadian National Railways should not go unnoticed by the House, I move, with apologies to, but seconded by, the hon. member for Red Deer (Mr. Towers):

That in the opinion of this House:

The cowboy from Crowfoot called Jack,

Went through the House doubled-tracked,

Trudeau's his protector But CN directors

Are saddled with Jack, and the flak.

THE PRIME MINISTER

PC

Thomas Gordon Towers

Progressive Conservative

Mr. Gordon Towers (Red Deer):

Madam Speaker, I rise under Standing Order 43 to observe that, in the light of certain appointments and selections regarding architects and railroads, the Prime Minister's office has assumed the roles of placement agency, hiring hall, staffing commission, and veto authority over public service recommending agencies. You do not need merit when you have friends in high places. 1 move, seconded by the hon. member for Lincoln (Mr. Mackasey):

Once upon a time, to get the job you needed merit;

Now all you do is join the Grits and wait and grin 'n bear it.

Plums and pork don't usually mix.

But they do when friend Pierre handles the fix!

INDIAN AFFAIRS

NDP

Terence James (Terry) Sargeant

New Democratic Party

Mr. Terry Sargeant (Selkirk-Interlake):

Madam Speaker, whereas since Wednesday of last week Indians from the Peguis reserve in Manitoba have been demonstrating peacefully outside the DIAND offices in Winnipeg to protest the longstanding critical housing shortage on their reserve, and whereas more than half of the Manitoba bands have now joined the demonstration in support of the Peguis and to protest their own housing needs, I move seconded by the hon. member for Churchill (Mr. Murphy):

That this House direct the Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development to reverse the answer he gave to me privately two days ago and go immediately to Winnipeg to meet with the Indian leaders involved to solve this matter before frustrations turn to anger and then anger to violence.
