BRITISH REGULATIONS RESPECTING HANDLING OF LIVESTOCK AND FOWL

On the orders of the day:

Leslie Gordon Benjamin

New Democratic Party

Mr. Les Benjamin (Regina-Lake Centre):

should like to direct a question to the Minister of Agriculture. In view of Canada's extensive agricultural trade with Britain, has the minister examined the new British regulations concerning humane methods in the handling of livestock and fowl for the production of meat and eggs to see whether Canadian standards meet British requirements and do not jeopardize our exports?

Mr. Herb Breau (Gloucester):

My question is intended for the Minister of Fisheries. What action does the minister intend to take concerning a statement made by the Maisonnette, New Brunswick, board of trade and published in a New Brunswick newspaper this morning to the effect that the people of Maisonnette were being discriminated against in connection with the granting of a fishing season in the oyster beds of Caraquet bay?

Order. I am not in a position to determine whether this is a matter of urgency, but I am inclined to think the question might be placed on the order paper.

COMMITTEE CONSIDERATION OF SALMON LICENCE LIMITATIONS

On the orders of the day:

NDP

Frank Howard

New Democratic Party

Mr. Frank Howard (Skeena):

I should like to direct a question to the Minister of Fisheries; the matter is of some urgency because many salmon fishermen begin at this time of the year to prepare for next season. Would the minister be prepared to refer the declaration about licence limitations on the salmon industry to a parliamentary committee at an appropriate time so it can be considered publicly?

Hon. Jack Davis (Minister of Fisheries):

The answer is yes. I may also say that a special appeal board has been set up on the west coast to look into these matters.
