Mr. Raymond Langlois (Meganfic):

Mr. Speaker, my question is directed to the Minister of Finance. Yesterday when referring to various cut-backs proposed by the government the minister let it be known that the expenditures of municipalities had not slowed down in the past ten years. Is it the intention of the minister to apply this austerity program to the extent of also slowing

REQUEST FOR ASSISTANCE TO BRITISH COLUMBIA SHIPYARDS

On the orders of the day:

PC

George Louis Chatterton

Progressive Conservative

Mr. G. L. Chatterton (Esquimall-Saanich):

Mr. Speaker, my question is directed to the Minister of Industry. In view of the critical situation in our shipyards on the west coast, particularly in the Victoria area where employment has dropped from 2,700 to 700 in the last five years, is the minister considering any measures to assist this industry?

Hon. C. M. Drury (Minisler of Industry):

Mr. Speaker, as I think the hon. gentleman is aware, a scheme of transitional arrangements in respect of the west coast shipyards was agreed upon some two years ago between the federal government and the ship construction industry. This program is continuing.

Mr. Chatterton:

A supplementary question, Mr. Speaker. Is the minister pursuing every angle with regard to the costsharing program with the United States to have some United States ships built in the shipyards of British Columbia?

Mr. Drury:

Yes, we are pursuing this actively. I think the hon. gentleman will be aware that there is some reluctance on the part of the government of the United States to have contracts carried out in Canadian shipyards for the construction of ships to be owned by the United States government.

INQUIRY AS TO RESULTS OF RECENT BOND ISSUE

On the orders of the day:

PC

Douglas Scott Harkness

Hon. D. S. Harkness (Calgary North):

Mr. Speaker, on November 10, I asked the Minister of Finance whether he could inform the house how successful the Canada savings bond campaign had been in comparison with former years, and particularly how much new money he estimated would come in from this source. He stated he would give that information when he presented his supplementary budget. As he did not do so last night I wonder whether he will do so now.

Hon. Mitchell Sharp (Minister of Finance):

Mr. Speaker, I regret that I overlooked this request when I was preparing my budget statement. A public statement has been made about this, though perhaps it does not answer all the questions asked by my hon. friend. I will look into the matter to see whether I can give him a full statement.

Mr. Speaker, I wonder whether I could direct a question to the Minister of Finance. In his search for income I wonder whether he would consider minting next year, for collectors' purposes, a silver dollar?
