John Whitney Pickersgill (Minister of Transport)

Mr. Pickersgill:

Mr. Speaker, the government has the responsibility given to it by parliament for deciding which route will be assigned to an air line, but it does not have the responsibility for deciding what kind of equipment the air line will use. That is a matter for the management of the air line.

Mr. Brand:

A supplementary question, Mr. Speaker. In view of that answer, and since apparently no decision will be made about the DC-9's at this time, would the minister consider allowing the C.P.R., or rather Canadian Pacific Airlines to fly these routes as well as Air Canada?

REQUEST FOR REPORT ON MEETING OF FUR SEAL COMMISSION

On the orders of the day:

Mr. T. S. Barneli (Comox-Alberni):

Mr. Speaker, after that last reply I shall not address a question to the Minister of Transport but will try the Minister of Fisheries. I would like to ask the Minister of Fisheries whether he can give the house any report upon the proceedings of the North Pacific fur seal commission, which is meeting at the present time in Ottawa.

I mean the U.S.A. Is it the

intention of the government to take advantage of the presence in Canada of these representatives to explore the possibility of extending this four power treaty arrangement to other areas of the Pacific fisheries?

Mr. Speaker, my question is supplementary, to the Minister of Fisheries. I am wondering whether the minister has received a brief from the fisheries delegation here and whether he has now studied it. I understand he is meeting them later tonight.

Mr. Frank Howard (Skeena):

A supplementary question, Mr. Speaker. Inasmuch as nearly all the subject matters in that brief have been pending for the last two years, I wonder whether the Minister of Fisheries would mind referring the matter to the decisive Minister of Transport so that we may get some decisions.
