LIB

Gérard Duquet

Mr. Gerard Duquel (Quebec East):

Mr. Speaker, may I direct a question to the Minister of Public Works?

In he Soleil, last Thursday, January 20, an article appeared saying that accommodations at the Quebec main post office were inadequate for the employees as well as for the public. I would like to know whether the minister has read the article, whether conditions are such as described and what he proposes to do to remedy the situation?

Hon. G. J. Mcllraiih (Minister of Public

Works): As soon as the hon. member drew the article in question to my attention, I immediately took steps to have an investigation made. A start has been made already on remedying the situation.

Hon. Gordon Churchill (Winnipeg South Centre):

I have a question for the Minister of National Defence. Is the minister giving consideration to the sending of military observers to Viet Nam in order to get first hand information on any developments in methods of warfare so the training of Canadian forces may be kept up to date?

Hon. Paul Hellyer (Minister of National Defence):

Mr. Speaker, this matter was given some thought, but in view of Canadian participation in the international truce commission, it was considered inadvisable. However, steps were taken to obtain from United States forces full reports resulting from their experience in Viet Nam.

Mr. Bell (Saint John-Alberf):

May I ask a supplementary question. Will the minister endeavour to speed up the consideration that is being given to maritime transportation problems so that the effect of the new legislation on the maritimes can be considered when that railway legislation is before the committee?

Mr. Pickersgill:

I do not believe, sir, it would be possible to have the study of the consultants completed in time to be included in the railway legislation that has been under contemplation for the last two or three years.

I am just as anxious as the hon. member to see the consultants proceed just as fast as they can, as long as they do a good job.
