Mr. L. E. Cardiff (Huron):

Mr. Speaker, I should like to direct a question to the Minister of Agriculture and at the same time draw it to the attention of the Minister of Finance.

I know the Minister is anxious to help the farmers of this country, but has he ever asked the Minister of Finance to try to remove the

II per cent sales tax on farm machinery, which is becoming unbearable to the farmers of Canada?

Mr. Speaker, naturally I wish to thank the Minister of Agriculture for his kind remarks in his reply to the hon. Member for Huron. I wish to assure that hon. Member that the Minister of Agriculture, as well as all the other Members of this Government, has the interest of the farmers at heart.

It may be of interest to my hon. friends to know that most items of farm machinery are not subject to the very heavy tax the hon. Member referred to.

Mr. Speaker, I wonder whether I may ask the Minister of Finance why it is that the price of farm machinery is going up, up and up?

Mr. Speaker, I am not sure that I would be allowed to answer a question of that kind on orders of the day. I am afraid the right hon. gentleman might suggest that my answer was too prolonged.

QUEBEC-REQUEST FOR ANNOUNCEMENT OF DAIRY POLICY

Hon. Harry W. Hays (Minister of Agriculture):

Mr. Speaker, while I am on my feet perhaps I would be allowed to answer questions asked yesterday by the hon. Members for Nicolet-Yamaska (Mr. Vincent) and Brome-Missisquoi (Mr. Grafftey) concerning the Government's new dairy program. In relation to these questions and their implications I have checked the correspondence which has reached my Department, and it is apparent that some farmers are still not fully aware just how the new policy affects them, and I should like to clear up some of the apparent misunderstanding.
