If persons are found to be inadmissible at a Canadian port of entry, they are refused entry to Canada. If persons gain entry temporarily in the normal tourist stream and are subsequently detected and found to be prohibited, they are subject to deportation proceedings according to the law. At this stage, the Minister of Citizenship and Immigration, depending upon the circumstances of the case, may be advised.

Law enforcement agencies are responsible for the detection and apprehension of criminals: Immigration officers cooperate fully with these agencies as may be appropriate in the circumstances. In the broader field of criminal intelligence, the Department of Citizenship and Immigration plays an active role in co-operation with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, to prevent alien criminals and the agencies of international crime from establishing footholds in Canada.
