INQUIRY AS TO FEDERAL CONTRIBUTION TO WORLD FAIR

On the orders of the day:

LIB

Hubert Badanai

Liberal

Mr. Huberi Badanai (Fort William):

I wish to address a question to the Minister of Finance. This question arises out of a report in the Financial Post of September 22, to the effect that the federal government has promised the city of Montreal $20 million to help that city obtain the world fair in 1967. Can the minister inform the house if this $20 million comes from the $100 million already set aside by parliament to celebrate Canada's one hundredth birthday?

Mr. Gilles Gregoire Lapointe:

I should like to direct a question to the Minister of Finance. Does he intend to remedy the discrepancy which now exists in Canada between production and purchasing power?

And I should like to ask him a supplementary question: is he aware that there is now a discrepancy between production and purchasing power?

Mr. Charles M. Drury (St. Antoine-Wesimount):

I should like to address a question to the Minister of Northern Affairs and National Resources. In view of recent press reports of the intention to continue next year the Dawson festival, has the government given any undertaking to provide further financial assistance for this event?

Hon. W. G. Dinsdale (Minister of Northern Affairs and National Resources):

As the hon. member is aware I am sure, the festival to which he has referred was sponsored by a group of public spirited Canadians. I am not acquainted with the current activities of the festival foundation but I do understand that, as a result of the substantial economic impact and benefit of the festival, it is the intention of the foundation to continue the festival.

Mr. Drury:

Mr. Speaker, you have given a ruling that if there has been no answer to a question, there can be no supplementary. Unfortunately, the minister declined to answer my question.
