LAY-OFFS AT MONTREAL AND VICINITY

On the orders of the day:

LIB

Joseph Gérard Yves Leduc

Liberal

Mr. Yves Leduc (Verdun):

On January 22 last I asked a question of the Minister of Transport concerning the lay-offs at Montreal and vicinity by Canadian National Railways. This question to my knowledge has not yet been answered. Does the minister expect such information shortly from the management of Canadian National Railways?

STATEMENT ON ESTABLISHMENT OF EVENING CLASSES FOR WELDERS

On the orders of the day:

PC

Michael Starr (Minister of Labour)

Progressive Conservative

Hon. Michael Starr (Minister of Labour):

I would like to answer a question put to me by the hon. member for Port Arthur yesterday on orders of the day regarding welding classes. The hon. member asked if such classes could be held in the evening for the retraining of people who are employed during the day. I answered that I was not aware of any such representations having been made.

Since then I have found that the hon. member has been in communication with the deputy minister, and I want to say that the classes sponsored by the department are for unemployed workers, whereas the hon. member's question refers to persons with jobs. I would therefore suggest to him that the proper authorities to which this question should be directed would be the local educational authorities in his community. They have the right and the duty to decide as to what type of courses may be made available for evening study programs.

TRANS-CANADA PIPE LINE INVESTIGATION OF WALK-OUT EAST OF PORT ARTHUR

On the orders of the day:

?

Mr. M. W. Marlin@Timmins

May I address a question to the Minister of Labour. Has the minister any information as to what is causing the delay in the settlement of the walk-out on the northern Ontario gas pipe line which was supposed to have been settled a week ago Monday?

Hon. Michael Starr (Minister of Labour):

We have had discussions, Mr. Speaker, and had arrived at what I considered to be an agreement with the pipe-line operators. The representatives of the unions were contacted and they were very satisfied with the decision as to the increased rate of the classification which is under dispute. The matter rests entirely on an agreement between the pipe-line contractors and the employees.

Fundy national park, namely through contact with various organizations?

On the orders of the day: Mr. E. B. Huffman (Kent, Oni.h I would like to direct a question to the Minister of Public Works. As a result of the shifting of the river bank adjacent to the public general hospital in Chatham, does the minister now propose to protect the whole area covered in the original plan agreed to by the hospital board and the department?

PC

Hon. Howard C. Green (Minister of Public Works):

Mr. Speaker, if I remember correctly arrangements were made some weeks ago to proceed with the work which had been discussed with me by representatives from Chatham. As for doing any additional work, I do not think that is the responsibility of my department.
