Mr. McCann:

Mr. Speaker, I was telephoned at my home on Saturday last by a representative of the Canadian Press and asked about this book and if I had read it, and my simple answer was that I had never heard of it.

Hon. J. J. McCann (Minister of National Revenue):

Mr. Speaker, the policy of the government, pending the report and the recommendations of the royal commission on broadcasting, is unchanged. Under this policy the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation has been authorized to develop the national television system and to establish television production centres at Vancouver, Winnipeg, Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal and Halifax. Also under this policy, licences are granted elsewhere to private applicants with the aim of extending service as widely as possible. If private stations are established in the Bonaventure and Gaspe areas, or in any other adjoining areas, the corporation will provide programs to them by means of television recordings if networks are impractical.

The C.B.C. has submitted proposals to the royal commission to increase the television coverage in areas where private stations are not established. Any such plans will have to be left in abeyance until the commission reports and parliament has a chance to study and act on its recommendations.
