Louis-René Beaudoin (Speaker of the House of Commons)
Liberal
Mr. Speaker:
Is it the intention of the hon. member to move concurrence in this report this day?
Subtopic: SIXTH REPORT OF STANDING COMMITTEE
Mr. David A. Croll (Spadina) presented the sixth report of the standing committee on banking and commerce.
Mr. Speaker:
Is it the intention of the hon. member to move concurrence in this report this day?
Mr. Croll:
No, Mr. Speaker.
Mr. Speaker:
Shall the deputy clerk dispense with the reading of this report? It appears to be a rather lengthy one.
Agreed.
Hon. Brooke Claxlon (Minister of National Defence):
Mr. Speaker, I have here a joint announcement by the governments of Canada and the United States with regard to continental defence. If I might have the permission of the house to do so, I would ask leave to table it and would ask that it be printed as an appendix to Votes and Proceedings, as I understand has been the practice in the past.
Mr. Speaker:
Is it agreed?
Agreed.
Hon. J. W. Pickersgill (Secretary of State):
The day before yesterday, Mr. Speaker, the hon. member for Winnipeg North Centre inquired about a return which was passed on March 3. The first part of this return made the following request:
Have any persons or companies been prosecuted, at any time since July 1, 1952, on charges of mixing butter with margarine?
The correct answer to that question would be no, but the government feels that it would be misleading to give that answer. I have spoken to the hon. member and if the house would agree to having the order amended to
read "with vegetable oils" instead of "with margarine", a return could probably be made on Monday.
Mr. Speaker:
Is it agreed?
Mr. Knowles:
I would not want to split hairs over a pound of butter, Mr. Speaker. I am sure we will agree.
Mr. Speaker:
Agreed.
