Mr. FOURNIER (Hull):

No. It is for rebuilding the inner seventy-one feet, spans 1 to 5 inclusive, repairing balance of wharf, repairing head lock by driving steel sheet piling, filling with stone and gravel with a concrete deck slab; and construction of a steel sheet pile wall on the west side of the dredged slip. Amount of contract, $29,692; inspection

and contingencies, $3,308. There is an estimate of $6,300 toward dredging at that place. We are making a survey.

Mr. BARRETT:

The wharf at Port Dover is in an equally dilapidated condition. I was wondering why there was not a larger vote for that. I presume it has been studied by the engineers. It is in really a dangerous condition at the present time. I notice that the wharf at St. Williams is not included in the item. Has that work been done? I spoke to the minister on that a year ago. I understood a vote was to be put in the estimates for repairing the wharf at St. Williams. The last information I had was that no wharf had been started there.

Mr. MacN'ICOL: I should like to ask one question on item 375. The Pelee island wharf amounts to $28,000. I am glad to see that. In vote 844 of the supplementaries an amount of $50,000 appears for the same thing. Is that the same wharf, or are there several wharves?

Mr. FOURNIER (Hull):

The work under contract at Pelee island is as follows: removal of cribwork protection pier, 14 feet by 164 feet, from the east to the west side of the north wharf, and extension of, the newly placed pier a distance of 83 feet. The estimated cost is given as $28,000. That is in the main estimates. In the supplementary estimates there is an amount of $50,000 for demolition of the cribwork superstructure and reconstruction in steel and concrete of the inner portion of the north wharf, for a length of 373 feet.

I am glad to see that. It is a beautiful island. There is quite a lot of transportation between the island and the mainland. Anything that makes shipment easier is better for the island.

Mr. MaeNICOL: The first item is "Bell Rock (Fort Smith)". Is "Fort Smith" correct? Should it not be Fort Fitzgerald?

Mr. FOURNIER (Hull):

It is Bell Rock. There is no mistake about that. This vote is to provide wharfage facilities at Bell Rock urgently required in connection with transshipment of freight going north. A wharf built by the Northern Transportation Company Limited in 1945 and formerly used for this purpose has been practically destroyed since that time.

Bell Rock is the northern terminus of the twenty-one mile portage to Fort Fitzgerald, and all water-borne freight for points north of Fort Smith carried by the Northern Transportation Company Limited is shipped from Bell Rock.
