VETERANS AFFAIRS

EDUCATIONAL COURSES UNDER REHABILITATION PROGRAMME

On the orders of the day:

PC

John George Diefenbaker

Progressive Conservative

Mr. J. G. DIEFENBAKER (Lake Centre):

Mr. Speaker, I should like to direct a question to the Minister of Veterans Affairs, of which I have given him notice. There are a number of veterans who are taking courses under the rehabilitation scheme who will have to discontinue their courses by the end of the present month because they have failed in one or more subjects. Many of these men are good and ambitious students who would be able to carry on in most of the subjects although they have had difficulty in one or more. Has the Department of Veterans Affairs given consideration to allowing otherwise good students to carry on in the regular way and receive their maintenance, providing the faculty of the university which they are attending will give approval or make recommendation to that effect?

Hon. IAN A. MACKENZIE (Minister of Veterans Affairs): Some months ago an

advisory committee was appointed consisting of the presidents of several universities who are working in cooperation with the Department of Veterans Affairs. The, committee met in this city yesterday and gave active consideration to this problem. I have not yet received their recommendations, but when I do s6 and a decision is made I shall immediately advise my hon. friend and the house.
