Mr. Speaker, I cannof understand the abnormal state of mind of the hon. member for Vancouver North. He has not done half as much as the hon. member for Broadview (Mr. Church) and myself for the soldiers.

Mr. POULIOT:

No. Mr. Speaker, this is a very serious matter. I wish the constituents of hon. member's were in the gallery to see what is going on now and who are the members who are defending the people. This is not a time to make jokes. We are talking seriously about the policy of the government and of those who enunciate that policy. Let me read to you the statement that has been made by the hon. member who is the parliamentary assistant to the President of the Privy Council, otherwise known as Prime Minister. Here is what he said, at page 3592 of Hansard:

I deny that the job we are doing here in this parliament-[DOT]

In that regard I agree with one hon. member from British Columbia who will be reelected, the member for New Westminster (Mr. Reid). The other day he said something with which I agree. I continue the quotation:

I deny that the job we are doing here in this parliament or in our factories or on our farms is just as vital as the job being done by those men who are offering their lives in France for our freedom to-day.

Mr. POULIOT:

Now, sir, leaving aside all the frills, this is the statement made by one w'ho was speaking on behalf of the President of the Privy Council in answer to questions put to him. He was dealing with items in the war appropriation bill and speaking with authority. I want to know if it is the policy of the government. If it is the policy of the government it will be easy to understand that the farmers and those in industry cannot expect consideration from the government. In a case like this the statement should be put on the record. I am sorry the Prime Minister is not here, but I wrould ask whether he approves that statement or not. That is the question. I do not want any answer to that from the deputy prime minister; I want an answer from the Prime Minister himself. I deny the deputy prime minister the authority to give the answer, to decide the case of the parliamentary assistant to the President of the Privy Council; it is none of his business, and ministerial solidarity does not go as far as that.
