Would the minister say why this item is up $10,000,000 this year?

Mr. RALSTON:

The increase in the cost of printing and stationery is due to higher per man cost overseas; special training equipment has been increased, and there is a large increase in sundries, due principally to an increase of $6,500,000 for telephone and wireless construction and maintenance, which was formerly included under operating expenses of property. That $6,500,000 is the big item in the increase of $10,000,000.

Mr. LOCKHART:

Are these elaborate recruiting huts which are stationed all over the country still in use? There is one near the cenotaph in Ottawa, and I wondered if they were all still in use.

I understand that the one in Ottawa to which my hon. friend refers is the recruiting hut for the C.W.A.C.

The CHAIRMAN:

I should like to know from the minister and the committee whether the sub-item should be considered individually, or whether the items will be taken together.

James Layton Ralston (Minister of National Defence)

Mr. RALSTON:

Certainly. There is an experimental station at Suffield, for which $1,916,810 is provided. Internment operations will cost $3,730,717; the inspection board of the United Kingdom and Canada, $10,589,000; departmental administration, $1,774,000; dependents' allowance board, $805,300 and dependents' supplementary grants fund-that is, the dependents' board of trustees-$3,500,-000. The total is practically the same as last year. It is pointed out to me that these figures are not strictly comparable, due to changes in accounting procedures resulting in different groupings of expenditures in the various years, and this really applies to all the items with which we have deen dealing.
