Mr. MAYBANK:

That is the point. The leader of the opposition says, "Did he get a commission on this?" Definitely, that is not the sort of thing I am suggesting; but this particular engineer, who jumped, immediately to the use of a certain kind of equipment, had been selling that equipment for years. He tried to persuade us in Winnipeg to keep that equipment in one of the hospitals, but they switched to lignite equipment and the result of switching to that equipment was apparently twofold. In the first place, our bills dropped from $38,000 a year to about $16,000 or $17,000. When the bills were high in the first part of that period when we had his equipment and had to bum the other kind of coal, we did not have the hospital fully open; but at a later time, after we refused this engineer, our bills were around $16,000 and the hospital was fully open, more space being heated at less cost. That is the expert who to a very large extent has made this decision He told me so.

Let us get one thing straight. Is any employee of Allied War Supplies Corporation interested in the sale of the equipment of which the hon. members speak.

Mr. HOWE:

The hon. member is making the charge that an employee of Allied War Supplies Corporation is engaged or interested in the sale of particular equipment. Is that true or not? Yes or no?

Mr. MAYBANK:

Just a moment now until I finish. I am not going to be whipped around, or down. I drew attention particularly to the fact that I was not making any such suggestion, and I did so in this way. The leader of the opposition called out to me, "Did he get a commission?" I drew attention particularly to the fact; I said, "That is just an illustration of the very thing I am not trying to charge."

Mr. MAYBANK:

The minister cannot both listen and speak at the same time. His province at this moment is to listen. I do not wish to be in any way truculent or disrespectful or to get under anyone's skin; on the other hand, while I do not know all my rights, I know some of them, and they are not going to be just whipped away at the will of anybody else.

Mr. MAYBANK:

Very well, Mr. Chairman, I am sorry. I withdraw that whole-heartedly without any mental reservations. I would make this observation, however, with reference to your own remark that I have the floor and may refuse to answer questions, or decline to be interrupted. I do not know that gets one anywhere sometimes when some people try to interrupt. One may decline to be interrupted but it does not necessarily work that way.
