Mr. CRERAR:

This work was started a few years ago looking to the restoration of fur bearing animals in the northern parts of our provinces. For the information of the committee I may say that approximately one-third of the Indian population of Canada are known as hunting and trapping Indians, who live by the chase, These Indians are located in the northern parts of the various provinces. Unfortunately the lack of sound conservation methods in the past has resulted in a great depletion of the fur bearing animals, with the inevitable result that the natural mode of living of these Indians has largely vanished, and in increasing numbers they are coming upon public relief. We have endeavoured to make arrangements with the provinces, with success in several instances, to have areas set aside where we would undertake the work, for example, of putting in dams,

or taking the necessary steps to recreate the natural conditions under which fur bearers, particularly muskrat, will propagate. Part of this vote will be spent in Manitoba, part in Saskatchewan, part in Alberta and a small amount in Quebec.

Mr. CRERAR:

Yes, that is done so far as possible, under proper supervision. Some simple engineering work has to be done, and in some instances markers have to be set out to indicate the boundaries of the areas.
