Mr. DUNNING:

The following return is furnished by the Canadian farm loan board:

1. Based on the number and amount of loans granted down to March 31, 1937, the average amount of first mortgage loans is

Motions jor Papers

between $1,900 and $2,000 and the average amount of second mortgage loans is between $600 and $700.

Legal fees paid on each loan depend on the amount of the loan involved and also on the state of title and the difficulties involved in clearing title and perfecting the security for loan, these fees being payable in accordance with a scale of fees fixed by the board.

2. The tariff of legal fees payable in Manitoba also applies in the other prairie provinces. The tariff of legal fees payable under Torrens land titles registration systems, such as are operative in the prairie provinces, is lower than the tariff of fees payable under other systems of land registration where title searches present greater difficulties.
