Mr. HEENAN:

I can tell the hon. gentleman that there is a salary of $10,000, $4,000 indemnity and $2,700 travelling expenses. I have not the automobile expenses before me. It is all included however in the item of $28,000.

If hon. members insist upon interrupting, they will be here just that much longer. The longer they shout the longer it will take to pass the item. I wish to have a correct answer to my question. May I infer that the minister costs the Dominion of Canada $50,000?

Mr. HEENAN:

I do not know what my

hon. friend is asking. If there is any information he wishes to have we may go into all the items thoroughly. I may tell the hon. gentleman that it cost the people of Canada $2,700 last year for the travelling expenses of the Minister of Labour, and for that sum he travelled about 40,000 miles, at an average cost of seven cents a mile. He went here, there and everywhere, when any dispute arose. In addition he visited the mines and other places at the request of the miners; he visited different industries to see the conditions under which men were labouring, and in all he covered about 40,000 miles.

Mr. FRASER:

I have before me an excerpt from the report of the Auditor General showing the expenditures for the year ended March 31, 1929. In that year the expenditures were as follows: Salary $10,000, indemnity, $4,000, personal expenses, $2,600, minister's automobile renewal, repairs, sundries and gasoline, $2,301, and expenses to Geneva, $6,691, making a total of $25,592. As far as I can learn from the Auditor General's report, that is the answer to the question I have addressed to the minister.

Mr. FRASER:

No, I did not multiply

anything. I added up the figures which the minister gave me across the floor of the house and the result was very close to S50,000.

No, not at all. I am trying to get an accurate statement of what the Minister of Labour cost this country; I am not objecting to the expenditure in any shape or form.
