Mr. ELLIOTT:

The contract price is $29.180; contingencies, inspection and so on, 32,920. The probable total cost of the work is $32,100.

Mr. ELLIOTT:

It is to provide towards the construction of an extension of 100 feet to the existing breakwater at North Head. This is the beginning of a rather extensive project, estimated to cost $120,000.

Mr. HANSON:

Of course that is quite an important point. It is the point at which the steamboats land. I have been there in an easterly gale and I quite appreciate the necessity of something being done. It is a wonder to me that something has not been done there before, because the ground swell is enormous in an easterly gale. Could the minister tell us whether the present breakwater is simply to be extended in the same direction, or is it intended to create something in the nature of a harbour at the steamboat landing?

Mr. ELLIOTT:

Yes. My memorandum is that the present breakwater is very serviceable for the vessels using it, but it cannot accommodate the larger vessel that is being put on the St. John-Grand Manan route. It is the only breakwater which exists on the New Brunswick side of the mouth of the bay of Fundy.

Mr. HANSON:

That is not a correct statement because there are other breakwaters on Grand Manan island-the minister has them in the estimates-at Seal Cove, Woodward's Cove and other places. .
