Mr. GUTHRIE:

Mr. Speaker, it is about

ten o'clock, and I know the arrangement between the whips is to continue the debate. I would therefore suggest that this is the right time for adjournment.

Mr. SPENCER:

There is an understanding between the whips that the debate shall continue for a day or two because several hon. members wish to speak. As I understand, there is a large party at government house to-night, and probably several hon. gentlemen are absent on that account.

Mr. CASGRAIN:

It was understood that the debate should proceed a little longer to-night, but apparently some hon. members who were to have spoken are attending certain functions-I do not know where-and consequently are not ready to proceed. Under the circumstances someone might move the adjournment of the debate.

On motion of Mr. Charters the debate was adjourned.

On motion of Mr. Lapointe the house adjourned at 9.55 p.m.
