Mr. WOODSWORTH:

A year ago I protested against such a monument. There is no need for monuments of this character, seeing that we have a memorial tower that might be considered sufficient. We have already, I think, quite sufficient monuments in commemoration of the war. We are shouldered with a huge national debt which absorbs half our revenues and there are a large number of soldiers who are not being adequately cared for. There are any number of reminders of the war and of its futility and I cannot see any necessity for spending money on still another. If we must have a monument of this character it should be one bringing out very distinctly the horrors and the uselessness of war rather than in any way glorifying war. I take this opportunity of voicing this protest and I know that similar protests are in the minds of people throughout the country, at least in western Canadh.
