John Dowsley Reid (Minister of Railways and Canals)
Unionist
Mr. REID (Grenville):
Since prohibition has come into force the seizures have increased by 1,100 per cent.
Mr. REID (Grenville):
Since prohibition has come into force the seizures have increased by 1,100 per cent.
Mr. CHISHOLM:
Has the department appointed any officers whose duty it is to look after these illicit stills?
Mr. REID (Grenville):
Now that the illicit stills have increased by 1,110 per cent, the hon. gentleman can readily understand that it takes more officers to hunt them down than were required before prohibition came into effect. The department is doing everything it can to put an end to these illicit stills. If it were not for these illicit stills, we could get along with considerably fewer officers.
Mr. DUFF:
Where are these illicit stills located? How many seizures have been made?
Mr. REID (Grenville):
In Ontario there are 37; in Quebec, 25; in New Brunswick, 1; in Nova Scotia, 3; in Manitoba, 6; in Alberta, 13; in Moosejaw, 7; in Vancouver, 11; in Victoria, 2.
Mr. READ (Prince):
Are there any in Prince Edward Island?
Mr. REID (Grenville):
No. The seizures were ten last year, and this year 110.
Excise-To enable the department to supply methylated spirits to manufacturers, the cost of which will he recouped by the manufacturers to whom it is supplied and to pay rent, power, freight, salaries, etc., $400,000.
Mr. McKENZIE:
It is the desire to have this item of $400,000 stand.
Mr. REID (Grenville):
Then the whole item will have to stand.
Mr. McKENZIE:
Is there any great
urgency about these votes for excise? We need not go over it all again. The Chairman will remember that we have discussed it all except this item of $400,000. I am willing that the next, $500, shall.be dealt with and carried.
Mr. LEMIEUX:
What became of Mr. Vincent, Deputy Minister of Inland Revenue?
Mr. REID (Grenville):
There is now only one deputy minister. Mr. Vincent was given his salary of $5,000 for this year and is receiving the salary of deputy minister as in the Estimates.
Progress reported.
On motion of Mr. Reid, the House adjourned at 11.03 p.m.
