I think that $35,000 for a little piece of land pn a back street was a little too high.

We would like this cleared up because it was the subject of Ivery common conversation among the business men of Winnipeg.

The hon. gentleman is speaking of a different building altogether. There was some land purchased from Mr. Kern for an immigration building which is a different item. This is for a customs warehouse.

This is an old building. We had built a new post office.

That brings to my mind the question of some litigation as regards the ownership of the old building. Now that you have vacated it as a post office, I have seen articles in the press stating it is going to revert back to the original owners.

I have heard nothing about that. The building is still to be occupied as a public building for Customs purposes and Inland Revenue and Assistant Receiver General.

Would it be convenient to have that used as a custom house when the examining warehouse and the other buildings are so far from it?

It must be at least a quarter of a mile from the present examin ing warehouse. Is it the intention to move all the customs business to that locality?

The Customs Department have asked for this accommodation, and we are giving it to them. I do not know whether they intend to move the entire business there or not. I understand that the Department of the Interior will use the old customs house for' a land office.

Mr. ROCHE.

If the hon. minister looks up the records of his department, I think he will find that there are communications in reference to the matter referred to by the hon. member for Macdonald (Mr. Staples). I remember hearing that matter discussed in the House in the time of the hon. gentleman's predecessor. I think a gentleman named Ballantyne owned the site in question, and donated it on the condition that it should be retained by the government as a post office site. When the matter was brought before the hon. minister's predecessor, he admitted that there were communications to that effect, and promised to bring them down at an early day, but failed to do so.
