$2,500 was spent last year in dredging. I do not think any decision has yet been come to as to how far the lake should be lowered. The work will he proceeded with from year to year, and we will see what the effect is.

Mr. EARLE.

My object in asking is this : A considerable sum is eaten up in sending a foreman there, in overseers' expenses and small matters like that, so that unless a considerable amount is voted there will not he much left. I think that it would be advisable to grant a larger amount so as to complete the work.

I would ask the hon. minister if he would give me what information he has in regard to the protection works

being carried on in the Fraser river for many years, the amount expended up to the present time, whether the work has been effective, and whether it is work which will have to be continued from year to year indefinitely.

The amount that has been expended up to the 31st December, 1903, is .$(100,000. I am informed by the officers of the department that this vote is asked for the purpose of making provision for maintaining, renewing and strengthening the existing works constructed for the improvement of the ship channel in the winter river. 1 am also told that it will be necessary from year to year to have certain votes available for the continuance of this work.
