There were cattle imported from Mexico before last year. We discussed this question last year somewhat and the danger was then pointed out. I congratulate the department upon having at last taken action in the matter and the medical officer on the new departure he has taken ?
My hon. friend must not forget that in addition to the importations there are exports which have to be passed upon by the officer iu charge. There were 57 horses, 1,131 cattle, 3,659 sheep and 64 swine exported fror i Charlottetown, all of
which had to pass under his inspection. My hon. friend would be one of the first to complain if we did not have a quarantine officer at Charlottetown.
Dr. Pethick has been the general officer of the department for Prince Edward Island and has done a great deal of work also in Nova Scotia and elsewhere. These items are for expenses, and, in addition he has a salary of $"00 a year which does not seem to be included in this particular item in the Auditor General's Report. Dr. Pethick does a great deal of travelling on the Island and in .Nova Scotia, and sometimes in New Brunswick and Quebec. He is on the regular staff and does whatever the department may require, wherever he may be sent, though he resides in Prince Edward Island and he would be first called upon for work in that province.
