I notice that the expenditure under this head last year was $3,700. Is it necessary to ask for $5,000 this year ?

There are a great many complaints about the loss of life in a wreck at Long Point, on Lake Erie, in August last. I would like to ask if the authorities at Washington have complained to this government or to the Department of Marine and Fisheries of that loss of life ?

As far as I know, there has been no complaint, direct or Indirect, from the Washington authorities.

Is there any particular object in the increase of $1,000 in this vote ? I see by the Auditor General's Report the expenditure last year was a little over $7,000, and the estimate this year is $9,000.

The MINISTER OF MARINE AND

The hon. minister's answer to me is hardly consistent with this vote. Last year the estimate was $8,000. and this year it is $9,000. The hon. gentleman does not expect to make much improvement for $1,000, I suppose ?

I do not know if any other special improvements are required except to keep closer inspection of them. Instructions have gone out to keep up inspection of boathouses and boats, and to make the crews perform their drill more regularly

than some of them have in the past. Much will be gained, if we make the crews more efficient than they were.

The hon. minister will observe that Port Stanley and Port Rowan are the only two life-saving stations on that portion of Lake Erie. The dangerous point is at Long Point, where the storms take place. I am aware that the American representative at that place has complained very strongly to the authorities at Washington concerning the sacrifice of life owing, as he believes, to the imperfect life-saving stations on the Canadian side of Lake Erie.

I can only say that nothing will give me greater satisfaction than to give the closest and most courteous attention to any suggestion that the hon. gentleman (Mr. Ingram) may make as 'to improvements of the life-saving stations on Lake Erie. If he will make these suggestions to me as head of the department privately, or make them publicly in the House, I can promise him they will receive full consideration.
